What would happen if I just stayed silent? The answer is nothing, silence is golden. Even though I know this, I am completely terrible at it. It’s not that I find what you say uninteresting. The thing is, it becomes uninteresting or rather terribly hard to focus on when the only thing I can pay attention to is how much my own tongue itches. Because I want you to listen to me, so much that I disgust myself for it. When you do, and I say something that makes you smile or laugh, it feels as though you are hugging all the broken parts of me. A feeling I am entirely dependent on. If I could spend half as much time listening to you as I do talking about myself, we’d be fine. All social rules would be followed, the cosmos would survive another day, and surely, so would you. Instead, we drown in me. I should just fix it, one plus one equals two. Awareness, determination, change. Reality? Me minus you, equals zero. Math has never been my strong suit, but even if it were, I still wouldn’t be able to count all the times I chose to take over and forget you. For me.
