What is Abstract Art?
Abstract art is a genre of visual art that departs from the representation of literal, tangible reality in favor of using shapes, colors, forms, and gestural marks to create compositions that emphasize a more subjective or emotional experience. Abstract artists often experiment with different techniques, mediums, and styles to convey their ideas, emotions, or perceptions through the artwork.
Unlike representational art, which seeks to depict objects, people, or scenes in a realistic manner, abstract art focuses on the non-representational aspects of the visual language. It can be non-objective, meaning it does not reference any specific subject matter, or it can be a more abstracted representation of a recognizable subject.
Abstract art emerged in the early 20th century as a response to the growing interest in exploring new ways of artistic expression. Pioneering artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint were instrumental in the development of the genre and their works continue to be influential today.
