This painting is inspired by the song "Shoes" by Lupe Fiasco. Much like the song itself, the composition is divided into two interconnected narratives. The first centers on a shoe and explores the emotional investment and imagination required to imbue an inanimate object with meaning and significance. The second focuses on the queue that forms on the day of a highly anticipated release, highlighting how people can momentarily set aside social, racial, and economic differences when united by a shared passion. As with much of the artist’s work, the painting incorporates references to his personal background and cultural heritage. Behind the shoe is a traditional Litema pattern from Lesotho, a decorative art form commonly found on the exterior walls of traditional homes and murals. The queue is depicted outside Domus, a department store chain that was a familiar presence in towns across Sweden until the mid-1990s. The artist chose to portray the Nike Air Max CB 94 because of the lasting impression the shoe made on him when he first encountered it as a basketball-loving teenager. Designed by Tracy Teague, the shoe perfectly captured the energy and larger-than-life personality of the legendary player for whom it was created—Charles Barkley.
