About

Karin Björnsdotter is a contemporary artist based on Sweden’s west coast. Her work moves between abstraction and figuration, with color and movement at its core. Through an intuitive, process-driven approach to painting, she explores presence, rhythm, and sensory experience.
Having grown up in South America and spent several years in Miami, she brings an international visual perspective to her work, expressed through vibrant color and a strong sense of movement.
Born in the early 1960s, she is the mother of two adult children and lives on the west coast with her partner. Alongside her artistic practice, she works as a yoga teacher. Nature—often in the company of her Lagotto, Enzo—remains an important source of presence and reflection in both her life and her art.

Inspiration

Karin Björnsdotter’s work is rooted in the immediacy of lived experience—within human encounters, shifting atmospheres, and the subtle tensions that arise between people. Her paintings emerge from moments of presence, where emotion and perception are allowed to surface and take form.
Her sensitivity to color carries traces of her upbringing in South America, where light, contrast, and visual intensity shaped her way of seeing early on. This chromatic awareness continues to inform her intuitive, process-led practice, in which each layer becomes part of an unfolding inquiry.
Through gestures, organic formations, and linear traces, she engages with what resists language—what is sensed rather than spoken. The works open toward a space of recognition and ambiguity, inviting the viewer into an encounter that is at once intimate and universal.

Karin Björnsdotter has a solid artistic educational background, with studies in both Sweden and the United States. She holds an Associate of Arts degree from the International Fine Arts College in Miami and has also studied at Nyckelviksskolan on Lidingö as well as at Folkuniversitetet in Uppsala.
Her education has been further developed through in-depth studies in painting and artistic process, including the CVP program with Nicholas Wilton and teacher training in Vedic Art. In addition, she has completed several art courses in Miami, contributing to a broad and internationally informed artistic practice.

Karin Björnsdotter’s painting is intuitive and process-based, with each work evolving through layers of color, movement, and continuous reworking. Using acrylic as her primary medium—often combined with crayon, ink, and touches of oil—she builds surfaces where transparency and density interact.

Her process is defined by an interplay between the spontaneous and the controlled, where brushstrokes, lines, and organic forms are allowed to evolve in an ongoing dialogue with the canvas. Through adding, reducing, and reshaping, a visual rhythm emerges, in which color carries both energy and depth.
The result is a body of work where the process remains present in the finished piece—each layer leaving a trace that contributes to a sense of movement, presence, and depth.
