About
I am Alvaro Leandro Izquierdo, a Cuban-Spanish artist born in Havana and raised in Barcelona, currently based in Gothenburg, Sweden. With a background in tattooing, I developed a strong interest in drawing, composition, and the expressive qualities of the human form, which naturally led me toward painting.
I work primarily with oil paint, creating both still life and figurative works. My practice is rooted in observation, with a particular interest in light, colour, atmosphere, and the emotional qualities that can emerge from a subject. Whether painting a person or an arrangement of objects, I aim to go beyond simple representation and explore the character and feeling within the image.
My work combines observation with expressive brushwork, allowing recognisable subjects to coexist with a more personal and intuitive interpretation. As an emerging artist, I am continuously developing my visual language while exploring different subjects and ways of translating what I see onto canvas.

Inspiration
My inspiration comes from observation and from the visual and emotional qualities found in everyday life. I am particularly drawn to people, objects, light, colour, and the atmosphere that can emerge from a simple scene.
In portraiture, I am interested in human expression, identity, vulnerability, and the subtle details that can communicate something beyond physical appearance. In still life, I find inspiration in the relationship between objects, composition, light, texture, and the quiet atmosphere of ordinary moments.
I am influenced by traditional and contemporary painting, photography, and the expressive possibilities of oil paint. I often begin with observation and references from real life, but allow the painting to develop intuitively through colour, composition, and brushwork.
Self-taught artist. Background in tattooing and several years of experience working with drawing, composition, and visual art.
Currently developing a new body of work focused on oil painting, exploring both portraiture and still life. I am continuing to build my portfolio and looking for opportunities to participate in exhibitions and collaborations.
Oil painting on canvas, combining traditional techniques with expressive brushwork. I work with layers of colour, light and texture to build depth and atmosphere while maintaining a balance between observation and a intuitive approach.
I usually begin by studying the subject and establishing the composition, proportions and main values. I then gradually build the painting through layers of colour, developing light, shadow and texture as the work progresses. I allow the process to remain flexible, making intuitive adjustments to colour, brushwork and details until the painting reaches the desired balance between realism and expression.
