Indira Sundberg (b. 1979) is a Gothenburg-based artist whose work explores the intersection of memory, atmosphere, and human experience.
Holding a B.Sc. in Product Development and Design, Sundberg approaches painting with both intuition and sensitivity to form, materiality, and composition. Working primarily in oil, acrylic, and egg tempera, she creates works that move between the semi-abstract and the figurative, often inhabiting the space between the visible and the perceptible.
Her paintings have been exhibited in galleries, cultural institutions, and curated interior environments across Sweden. Through collections, exhibitions, commissions, and collaborative projects, she continues to explore how art can deepen our relationship with place, atmosphere, and the inner worlds we carry within us.

My work explores the landscapes we inhabit both around us and within us.
For many years, landscape served as the primary language in my paintings. Horizons, weather, water, forests, and light became vehicles for exploring memory, longing, solitude, and presence. Rather than depicting specific places, the works sought to capture something less tangible: the feeling of being moved by a landscape and the traces it leaves behind.
Over time, figures have gradually begun to emerge. They are not portraits, nor representations of particular individuals. Instead, they function as presences, creatures, or fragments of inner states inhabiting a psychological terrain. Familiar and unfamiliar at once, they exist somewhere between memory, imagination, dream, and reality.
My process is intuitive and layered. Paint is built, removed, obscured, and revealed. I am less interested in providing answers than in creating spaces for contemplation. Ambiguity plays an essential role within the work, allowing each painting to remain open to interpretation and personal experience. I’m interested in the quiet power of ambiguity: how a landscape can feel like a memory, how a face can become a mask, how light and shadow shape our emotional responses to space. Across mediums, I aim to create work that invites reflection rather than resolution.
Whether through landscape, atmosphere, or figure, my paintings are ultimately concerned with what exists beneath the surface of ordinary perception.
